Sometimes, the urge to weave can set in on a Sunday morning. Especially when dad leafs through Piecework (dad leafs through Piecework, mom reads Piecework), the American magazine on textile history, and there is a mini-loom on the cover.

When you’re 8 years old, such an urge can’t be put off for later, so you have to work with what you have on hand. Also, when you’re a left-handed boy who is more deft with a soccer ball than with your hands, a quick, satisfying first project is what you need.

So we dove into the recycling bin, and came up again with two empty cereal boxes. Great weaving material!

After having cut the boxes in 2 cm-wide strips, the weaver started working.

Not always easy to line up things properly, but with some patience and lots of encouragements, things work out in the end.

Pas trop mal! (Faut pas être perfectionniste non plus…)

Not too bad! (Perfect is the enemy of good…)

I helped my little weaver to fix the strips with adhesive tape and to cut of the ends.

And when you turn the work over… a colourful surprise!

I think that next time, we’re going to try to make a small make-shift loom with inspiration from this tutorial.

For slightly more advanced weavers, Sister Diane has an e-book on weaving without a loom which I find very tempting!
