We continue on our « baktus » theme (dedicated to shawls worked from one side tip to the other), and today we pull out our crochet hooks!

A quick panorama confirms that Hélène Marcy/EclatDuSoleil really loves the baktus construction – she’s the designer behind the three crochet patterns of this kind currently available in the shop.

Solveig is almost more like a scarf than a shawl. It’s a charming design that’s very nice to work with its textured stitch pattern and the ruffled border.
The shawl in the picture was made using 3 balls of Mini Mochi (col Neptune Rainbow 108). If you choose this option, take care to follow the instructions on how to distribute your yarn at the beginning of your pattern – if not, you will need 4 balls, and your scarf will be bigger (perhaps not a bad thing after all!).

Guirlande is a true baktus: you start at a tip, you finish at the other one, and there is nothing more to add. The double crochets in the center, the leaves in the border and the tips in the edging are all worked at the same time with the three stitch patterns appearing on every row.
Since the number of rows in each repeat is different for the leaf pattern and for the edge tips, this design will require some attention at the beginning. Once you have learned the progression for each stitch pattern, it becomes easy.
The shawl in the picture was worked in a fingering weight yarn – my fingering weight merino works well. I have also made one in laceweight alpaga, without changing the hook size, and the resulting shawl was light, elegant and soft.

Corolle is also a baktus even if it’s big and large enough to pass for a semi-circular shawl. The lightweight center with its little cluster-dots is worked from one tip to the other. You will then work the first row of the magnificent border along the curved selvedge.
The shawl in the picture was crocheted in a vintage yarn from the designer’s personal stash. This pattern would be lovely worked in yak down, for a very warm and soft shawl, or in the wool-silk blend London, for a very elegant accessory.

  1. I am really enjoying working the Solveig in a deep red alpaca from your shop. And someday I will get started on the Guirlande with that incredible leaf pattern. These are so beautiful.
